Oy . . . Glenn Beck

First, he insulted me and my take on Judaism by saying that people should flock from congregations that state that their mission is "social justice," and now, this: Glenn Beck has insulted me and all my colleagues of "reformed"(sic.) rabbis.  On his radio show he reacted to a letter signed by 400 rabbis to Fox News claiming that Beck has gone to far with his rhetoric of always using Holocaust and Nazi imagery.  Listen to the clip at 2:55 to hear why I am insulted.

I don't think I am a radical.  Maybe I have been brainwashed by Rabbi David Saperstein.

  5. As much as I don't like Glenn Beck, I must say I see a lot of validity into his point here to Reform rabbis. I mean no offense to you, Rabbi Satz, but I (and my family, independently) left the Reform movement because there was more of a focus on Liberalism than Judaism. Not that liberalism is wrong, but its place is not the synagogue. All of the rabbis at my synagogue pushed political agendas and found Judaism to fit into it. I left for other forms of Judaism that were rooted in our Jewish tradition, not progressiveness, because after all synagogues are meant as havens for Jewish learning and worship. I'm sure not all Reform rabbis/shuls fit Glenn Becks stereotype, but my experience as a Reform Jew is very close to what he says in this clip, unfortunately.

In terms of synagogue's mission being "social justice" I don't think that is wrong. However, I find it worth noting that I went to a VERY large Reform congregation and was the ONLY person in my confirmation class to do a project helping people as opposed to the environment. In my experience, emphasis has been place on the environment (largely because of politics of global warming) and too little focus is on helping our fellow human being. Again, that is certainly not the case everywhere I am sure but it has been my experience in Reform Judaism.

  6. Glen Beck should've been more tactful. He should've thought before uttering something like that.
